What is engineered wood siding?

Engineered wood siding is a manufactured composite material made from wood strands or fibers bonded with resin, designed to resist moisture, insects, and weathering better than solid wood.

Engineered wood siding is a factory-manufactured product composed of wood fibers or strands mixed with resin binders, then pressed into boards and coated with a protective finish. Brands like LP SmartSide dominate the market with this composite approach, which differs fundamentally from milled solid cedar or pine.

The material is engineered to address problems that plague traditional solid wood siding in Florida's climate. Moisture penetration, fungal growth, and termite damage occur more readily in solid wood, especially where humidity stays high year-round. Engineered wood resists these threats because the resin-bonded composite is less absorbent and denser than natural wood. The wood fibers are also treated during manufacturing, adding an extra layer of protection before the board ever ships to a jobsite.

Most engineered wood siding arrives with a factory-applied primer or base coat, and many products include a finish coat as well. These coatings are engineered to work with the composite substrate and are often warranted for 15 to 30 years depending on the product line and whether they are exposed to direct sun or covered.
