What is a vapor barrier?

A vapor barrier is a material layer installed within a wall assembly to limit the movement of water vapor from one side to the other, protecting interior structures from moisture damage.

A vapor barrier is a material layer placed inside a wall assembly to restrict moisture vapor from passing through to areas where it can condense and cause rot, mold, or structural damage. Common vapor barriers include polyethylene sheeting, kraft paper, and foil-faced insulation. Unlike a water-resistive barrier such as house wrap, which sheds liquid water from the outside while allowing vapor to escape, a vapor barrier actively blocks vapor movement in both directions.
